Endodontics in Laguna Beach
Toothaches are not only uncomfortable, they pose a threat to the entirety of your oral health. Toothache pain is most often caused by an infection in the tooth pulp (pulpitis) or root (abscess).. Deep infection is the leading causes of tooth loss, because it damages a tooth from the inside out. If left untreated, the tooth will be irreversibly damaged. Infected teeth can be healed and saved with endodontic care or root canal therapy.
At Laguna Dental Arts, we are committed to preserving your natural teeth through experienced and precise endodontic care. Through our extensive training, expertise, and in-office technology, patients can receive lasting solutions to tooth infections.
Symptoms of Tooth Infection
It’s important to seek care for a tooth infection as soon as possible. If left untreated, pulpitis can significantly compromise a patient’s oral health. Severe cases can cause both tooth loss and resorption of the jaw bone loss. Patients with an abscess or pulpitis are also at-risk of bacteria entering their bloodstreams.
Be on the lookout for these common symptoms of a tooth infection:
- dull aching or sharp pain in the tooth or jaw
- sensitivity to temperature
- redness and / or swelling of the gums, jaw, and face
- a bitter taste in the mouth
- foul breath
If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, please don’t hesitate to call our office for treatment. The success of endodontic therapy depends heavily on early intervention.
How Does Dr. Reitz Perform Root Canal Therapy?
First, an anesthetic is administered for the sake of comfort. Once the area is completely numb, the top of the damaged tooth is gently opened to give Dr. Reitz access to the inner canals. These areas are cleansed and sanitized. Dr Reitz ensures no infected material is left behind. Then the canals are filled with a biocompatible and anti-bacterial substance before being sealed with a filling or crown.
Root canal therapy is typically completed in one visit to the dental office. The if a crown is necessary, this may take an additional one or two visits, but will result in a fully reconstructed tooth. You will notice the difference in comfort quickly and will soon be back to enjoying your favorite foods. With the infection gone and the tooth restored, your smile will again be functional and attractive.
What Causes Pulpitis?
There are a number of factors that contribute to dental infection- from a patient’s hygienic routine to their genetic predisposition, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of pulpitis. While the precise reason for each specific case of pulpitis will vary, an infected or abscessed tooth can typically be attributed to severe decay caused by poor oral hygiene, at least in part. We at Laguna Beach Dental Arts recommend following a thorough and consistent dental hygiene regimen and seeking regular professional cleanings in an effort to prevent tooth infection.
